Imam ash-Shaafi'ee (rahimahullah) said:

A man said to al-Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah):
‘The people sit around you so that they may find fault with you!’ So he said, ‘Indeed, I encouraged my soul to aspire for Paradise so it aspired for it. Then I encouraged it to aspire for salvation from Hellfire and so it aspired for it. Then I encouraged it to aspire for salvation from the people, but I didn’t find a way to that. Indeed the people were not pleased with their Creator although He provides for them, so how can they be pleased with another creation like themselves?’ (Al-Bidaya wal-Nihaya 9/318 )

Imām Al-Zuhrī said:
"Verily, knowledge has calamities [that afflict it]. One of its calamities is when the scholar is left, until he goes away with his knowledge. Another calamity is forgetting [knowledge]. Yet another calamity is lying about [knowledge], and this is the worst type."(Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr, Jāmi’ Bayān Al-’Ilm article 684)

Shaykh Al-Fawzân:
"Have patience with the shortcomings of the woman. Do not argue about every little thing she does. Overlook the faults that do not affect the marriage."(al-Iffihaf, p.865)

Maymūn ibn Mahrān:
"I have been among people who I would feel ashamed to speak in front of. And I have been among people who only spoke the truth or kept silent. And I have been among people who had never really seen the sky: they had not looked up with their eyes, for fear of their Lord."(Abū Bakr Al-Daynūrī, Al-Mujālasah wa Jawāhir Al-’Ilm 5/213)

An-Nu'man ibn Bashir was heard to say on the minbar,

"Shaytan has snares and traps. The snares and traps of Shaytan are to exult
ungratefully in the blessings of Allah, to boast about the gifts of Allah,
to have pride at the expense of the slaves of Allah, and to follow passion
for other than the sake of Allah."
(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 553)

"If our hearts were pure, we would never be bored of the remembrance of Allah."- Ibn Al-Mubarak (Al-Zuhd' as in 'Al-Kanz', 1/218)

Malik Ibn Dinar:
“By Allah! If it was possible for me not to sleep, I would not sleep out of fear that the punishment would descend and I am asleep. By Allah! If I had some helpers, I would spread them out among the dunyaa and give them orders to cry out to the people, ‘O mankind! The Fire! The Fire!’ “
(Al-Ihyaa, 4/567)

Imam Muhammad Ibn Sireen:
“I have never envied anyone over anything: if a person is going to be in the Fire, how could I envy him over some worldly matter when he is destined for the Fire?! And if he is going to Paradise, how could I be envious of a man of Paradise with whom Allah tabâraka wa ta’âlâ is pleased?!”
(Abu Bakr Al-Daynoori, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawaahir Al-‘Ilm, 2931)

Haani’, the freed slave of ‘Uthmaan (radiyAllahu'anhu) said:
“Whenever ‘Uthmaan used to stand over a grave, his beard would become wet from tears.”
(Al-Hilya, 1/61)

‘Umar ibn Abdil-’Aziz:
“Become a scholar if you are able. If you are not able, then be a student. If you can not, then show love for them. If you are unable to do that, then (at least) do not hate them.”
(Ibn Abdil-Barr in Jaami'u Bayaanil-'Ilmi wa Fadhlihi, #143)

The Prophet ordered us to throw dust – not gold – at the faces of the gratuitous flatterers. Instead, we throw dust at the faces of our sincere advisers and critics.

Imam Az-Zuhree:
“The people of knowledge who came before us used to say, ‘Salvation lies in clinging to the Sunnah.’ ”
(Ad-Daarimee, 96)

Qaasim al-Joo’ee said:
“I advise you with five matters:
(1) when you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly;
(2) when you are praised do not become happy;
(3) when you are criticised, do not become upset;
(4) when you are not believed, do not become angry;
(5) and if the people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them.”
(Related by Ibn al-Jawzee in Sifatus-Safwaa, 2/200)

Abu Al-Ashhab said:
” ‘Umar passed by a garbage dump and stopped there, and it was as if his companions were bothered by it (the smell). He said, ‘This is the world of yours which you are so eager for and you weep over.’ ”
('Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab, His Life And Times, By 'Ali Muhammad As-Sallaabi, Vol. I, p. 288)

Ahmad Ibn Harb said:
“There is nothing more beneficial to a Muslim’s heart than to mix with the righteous and to watch their actions, while nothing is more harmful  to the heart than mixing with the sinners and watching their actions.”
(Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabeer, p.100)

Once ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Azeez was advised:
“O ‘Umar, beware of being the ally of Allâh in open, while being His enemy in secret. If one’s nature in open and secret do not equate then he is a hypocrite, and the hypocrites occupy the lowest level in Hellfire.”
(Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabeer, p.100)

Al-Hasan Al-Basree:
“To endure short-lived difficulties that are followed by long lasting ease, is better than hurrying for a short-lived ease that is followed by ever-lasting hardship.”
(Al-Hilyah, 2/134)

Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah:
"Calamities, trials and tests are signs of love from Allah for the believers. They are comparable to a cure; although it may be bitter, you accept it because it is from the one whom you love; and to Allah belongs the best example."
(Ighaathatul Lahfan” p. 286.)

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (radiyAllahu'anhu):
“Verily knowledge is more precious than wealth. Knowledge preserves you, while you preserve wealth. Knowledge judges while wealth is judged upon. The possessors of wealth have died, while the possessors of knowledge live on. Their (the scholars) bodies have passed away, but they are still present in the hearts of the people.”
(Adab Al-Dunya Wa Al-Deen, p.48)

Talq ibn Habeeb:
“Indeed the rights of Allaah are far greater than the servant can fulfill, and indeed the blessings of Allaah are far more than can be counted, however, be repentful in the morning and evening (i.e. throughout the day).”
(Siyar A'laam an-Nubalaa, 4/622)

Is it permissible to force one's daughter to marry someone she is not pleased with?
Shaykh `Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa`dee:
Her father cannot force her, nor can her mother force her to marry even if the both of them (i.e. mother and father) are pleased with his practice of the religion.
(Al Majmoo'ah As-Sa'diyah vol. 7 p 349)

Filthy language is used by people who don’t have the maturity or intelligence to express themselves with better words.

Bakr al Muzani said:
“If you want your prayer to be of benefit to you, say to yourself, ‘I might not have a chance to perform another prayer.’”
[Jaami' Al-'Uloom Wal-Hikam, p.466]

Bakr Ibn ‘Abdullaah Al-Muzani said:
“If you see someone older than you then respect him [by] saying, ‘He has beaten me to Islam and righteous action.’ If you see someone younger than you then respect him saying to yourself, ‘I have beaten him in sins’.”
(Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabeer, p.100)

Maalik Ibn Dinaar:
“Whoever proposed to the world, then the world would not be satisfied until he gave up his Deen as dowry.”
(Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabeer, p.100)

Abdullâh bin Masud (radiyAllahu'anhu):
"One of the worst sins is when a man says to his brother, “Fear Allah,” and he replies, “Worry about yourself.”
(Abu Bakr Al-Daynooree, Al-Mujaalasah Wa Jawâhir Al-‘Ilm, 2619)

Abu Hafs Al-Fallaas said:
“I said to Yahyaa Ibn Sa’eed during his sickness: ‘May Allah give you well being,‘ so he answered: ‘Whatever is fondest to Allah is fondest to me.‘ “
(As-Siyar, 9/182)

Ahmad bin Hanbal:
"If a man knows himself, the praises of the people will not benefit him."
(Anis al-Fudala' 11/211)

Wahb Bin Munbih said:
“The example of the dunya (worldly life) and hereafter is like the example of a man who has two wives. If he pleases one of them, the other one will be displeased.”
(Kitaab Dham Ad-Dunya, 1/119)
